When it comes to skin, it’s true that men’s skin is far less sensitive than of a woman’s. Men’s facial skin is thicker and less likely to be sensitive to the ingredients in skin care products. Hence, they have a very simple skin care routine and since they don’t wear any makeup so it’s pretty much hassle-free.
However, skin after shaving is entirely a different story. Thick and kinky hair, heavy beard hair growth can cause real problems which when gets accompanied by irritation or razor bumps becomes a big problem. With proper face care, these can be very well cured and a clean and soft skin can be achieved! Below are some tips on how to pick out products for your skin type and some product recommendations.
Washing of Face – When it comes to washing the face, most men tend to use the bathing bar or just any bar available. Well, that is alright if you have a normal to oily skin. But if you have dry skin, the bar soap will dry out the dry skin even more. If the skin feels tight and a little itchy after washing then it’s recommended that you use a liquid facial cleanser. However, if you insist on a bar soap then try switching on to moisturizing soaps which have Glycerin, Vitamin E oil, Olive oil or Jojoba Oil as ingredients.
If you have acne problems then your skin type is most probably oily and you want to look for ingredients like Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid or Benzyl Peroxide in your facial cleansers, be it a bar or a liquid one. All these three ingredients are exfoliating agents and they help remove the top dead layer of the skin which then allows deep cleaning of the pores, hence reduced acne. They also have anti-bacterial properties which again helps healing and prevention of acne.
Moisturizing – While for some men moisturizing bar soaps might be just enough to hydrate their skin but the proper way to get the skin hydrated is by applying a moisturizer after washing the face. For dry skin types, a thick cream will be the best choice. For normal skin types, a moisturizing lotion or any cream which is lighter and less oily. Lastly, for the oily skin type, a gel formula or a skin toner would be good. For men with acne problems again, the moisturizers containing Glycolic acid and Salicylic Acid would help prevent clogging of pores, hence, preventing acne. Not to forget the importance of Sunscreen here! Sunscreen plays a great role in preventing sun damage on the skin and delays skin ageing too! Make sure you use a sunscreen every day, either a combined with a moisturizer or both separately.
Shaving and After Shave – If you have found a comfortable way to shave then it’s okay but if you still face problems like nicks, cuts, burns, razor bumps, etc, then its time to change. If you face skin irritation from shaving then go for a shaving cream or gel that has aloe in it. Lather up more with water and leave it for about a minute. This will soften the skin and the beard hair and will make your shave comfortable. You can also try pre-shaving oils, left several minutes before they soften the beard hair and makes the shave comfortable.
Razor bumps are caused by ingrown hairs, look for a shaving cream that contains glycolic acid or salicylic acid, exfoliating agents that unplug pores. Choose hypoallergenic products without fragrance to avoid further irritation to your skin. Another very important thing is the razor you use. Electric razors don’t cause much irritation as compared to the blades, but if you still prefer blades then go for the single or at the most, double blade razor. The multi-blade razors though claims to give you a close shave but they cause skin irritation more than one can imagine. If you have trouble with razor burn and razor bumps, you don’t want a very close shave. It’s better to leave a little growth in order to avoid ingrown hairs.
